Organization of American Historians President Nell Irvin Painter recently invited you to become a member of the OAH. As President-elect I join her in encouraging you to join.
When I was in graduate school in the late 1960s, I believed that belonging to the Organization of American Historians was an essential step in becoming a professional historian. I joined in March 1967 during my second semester. The articles in the Journal of American History were invaluable as I prepared for prelims, and the book reviews provided not only a model of concise evaluation but also needed insights into current historical literature. It was an extraordinary experience when in 1970 I won the OAHs Louis Pelzer Memorial Award for the best graduate manuscript and realized that historians would be reading my essay in the Journal.
Today you can read the Journal online, search for recent scholarship, and, of course, save an enormous amount of research time using the extraordinary tools in the digital world. I have attempted to keep current with these tools, but no digital program could replicate the friendships I have formed at the annual conventions. To me the convention is a combination of family reunion and intellectual feast.
My career has straddled both university teaching and public history, and the Organization of American Historians has been essential in both arenas. The OAH has become increasingly supportive not only of public historians but also of community college professors and K-12 teachers. The OAH Magazine of History gives teachers at the high school and college levels both instructive essays and lesson plans. In addition, the OAH supports the National Coalition for History in advocating historical issues.
Although many of you plan to teach at the college or university level, I often talk with graduate students about careers in public history, and, since I have spent a delightful quarter century at the Smithsonians National Museum of American History, I speak enthusiastically about careers outside the academy. The OAH is deeply invested in public history and works closely with the National Park Service, museums, and federal historians, among others, and the Journal features reviews of museum exhibits.
