Dear DePaul history students,

I am the librarian in a Chicago Public School (Bronzeville Scholastic Institute) on the south side and for the last several years about 200 of our freshmen and sophomore students have been participating in the Chicago Metro History Fair. In case you are not familiar with this organization here is the link to their web site:

http://www.chicagohistoryfair.org/

Several of our students' projects have actually gone on to the state history fair. We have had DePaul history students volunteer to judge our school fair in the past and we have greatly appreciated their help.

The teachers and I also were talking about the fact that we could use college student helpers at any stage of the project. Imagine that we are usually one or two adults at a time dealing with up to 35 students in a class, most of whom have no help at home and need a lot of individual attention. The addition of another adult person who has some understanding of history is invaluable.

Our funding situation at CPS is pretty awful this year so we are not able to pay people, but if you would like to gain some experience working with teenagers and teaching history in a very hands on way, our situation might appeal to you. You would be with an experienced teacher and/or librarian at all times and we will coach you as necessary. We start the projects in November and work on them more or less continuously until the school fair at the end of February. We basically can use help on any work day. If you think that this might be a valuable experience for you, please feel free to contact me by email or phone.
