Students will also acquire a familiarity with themes, problems and historiography in regard to the state and public life in India under the rule of the East India Company and the British Crown (roughly 1757 to 1947). Subjects covered include the establishment, ideologies, objectives and development of colonial administration, plus the organized responses to the state and colonial rule in Indian religious, social, economic and political life. However, the course will not neglect public and political developments that owed little to colonial institutions. A balance between political, social and economic history encourages familiarity with different perspectives and approaches.
