Dr. William P. Murphy teaches in Northwestern University's Dept. of
Anthropology and the Program of African Studies.  He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia and later returned to Liberia to do anthropological fieldwork for his dissertation.  After graduate school, he returned again to West Africa and did fieldwork among the Mende of Sierra Leone.  He is currently turning his attention to the recent crises in Liberia and Sierra Leone by working on a book dealing with the anthropological problem of violence, especially in relation to child soldiers and women in those civil wars.

The event is sponsored by the Illinois Society for International Development (ISID), which promotes awareness of international development issues in Illinois and encourages networking and discussion.   ISID organizes events monthly, the second Tuesday of every month, focusing on international development issues.  Information about events and   opportunities related to international development is distributed through the ISID listserve.
