Course Description for HST 382 (JYEL approved):
The Chicago History Museum is one of the premiere public history institutions in the United States and offers an ideal learning environment for future public historians. In this course, students will develop skills and knowledge applicable throughout their public history careers. They will gain a firm conceptual understanding of how the Chicago History Museum does public history, emphasizing its urban context. Students will apply this knowledge to class discussions, assignments, and actual museum projects. Ultimately, students will not only learn what kind of work takes place in a history museum, but also how to work in a history museum. Dr. Peter T. Alter, a museum curator, will be the Instructor. Several Museum staff members and others will also serve as guest presenters.
