Harold Washington: The Man and The Movement
***********************************************************
Opens Saturday, October 4, 2003 at the Chicago Historical Society

On April 12, 1983, to the surprise of almost all political observers and
media pundits, Congressman Harold Washington won Chicago's mayoral
election, becoming the city's first African American mayor. Commemorating the 20th anniversary of this historic election, the Chicago Historical Society's exhibition Harold Washington: The Man and The Movement captures the memories of the mayor that live in the hearts and minds of a diverse cross section of Chicagoans. His fight for economic and social justice, civil liberties, racial inclusion, and many other issues have extended his legacy into 21st-century Chicago.
