The Nicholson Center for British Studies at the University of Chicago is
pleased to announce its second graduate organized conference:
Principles of Association in British History
Friday, April 8, 2005

University of Chicago campus
Principles of Association in British History will explore the links,
contrasts, and similarities between the principles that are thought to guide
human association in different areas of social life. Several renowned
scholars will head the discussion, among them Mary Lyndon Shanley (Vassar),
Samuel Fleischacker (UIC), and Avigail Eisenberg (British Columbia).
An inter-disciplinary event, of interest to students and scholars of
Political Science, Philosophy, History, English, Economics, Sociology,
Religious Studies, and related fields, the conference will encourage
discussions in a broad scholarly context, drawing connections between
disciplines and areas of study that are often isolated from each other.
The conference will explore how these principles of association have been
manifested, defended, and contested throughout British history, and will be
organized in four panels:
Panel 1: Politics and Association
Presenters: Samuel Fleishchacker (UIC), Michael Goode (UIC), Thomas Weber (U
of C). Discussant: Patricia Nordeen (U of C)
Panel 2: Identity and Pluralism
Presenters: Avigail Eisenberg (University of British Columbia), Jacob Levy
(U of C), Jane Silloway (Northwestern). Discussant: Craig Hargett (U of C)
Panel 3: Marriage, Sexuality and the Family
Presenters: Mary Anne Case (U of C), Mary Shanley (Vassar), Hristomir Stanev
(U of C). Discussant: TBA
Panel 4: The Sovereign and Its Subjects
Presenters: Robert McJimsey (Colorado College), Victor Muniz-Fraticelli (U
of C), Dana Rovang (U of C). Discussant: Emily Nacol (U of C)
