Dear Graduate History Major,

As I believe you know, this Friday the Department of History is holding
its First Annual Student History Conference. The program is attached.

As you can see, six graduate students and eighteen undergraduate
students will be presenting papers on nine panels chaired by members of
our faculty. In addition, a continental breakfast will be available at
the opening remarks and refreshments will be provided at the Phi Alpha
Theta Reception and Conference Awards Ceremony.

Our plenary speaker is Distinguished Professor Andrew Cayton of Miami
University of Ohio, who specializes in the history of the Early
Republic. He is the author of many books on the history of the Midwest,
and most recently published The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in
North America, 1500-2000, 2005. The Washington Post calls this book "far
and away the most important contribution to U.S. military history to
appear since this nation emerged as the world's sole superpower."
Professor Cayton will be speaking on "American Odyssey: The
Internationalization of Ulysses S. Grant."

This conference is for all of our students. We hope that you will
participate fully. Please attend some sessions as well as the plenary
talk and the receptions. Support your peers as you learn about their
work. We are excited about this event, and look forward to seeing you
this Friday.

With warm regards,

Dan Goffman
Chair
