THE CREATION, CULTURE, AND MEANING OF COMMUNITY:
A GRADUATE HISTORY SYMPOSIUM
The History Graduate Student Association of Loyola University Chicago
is pleased to invite colleagues in history to submit proposals for
individual papers or panels to present at the Inaugural Loyola
University Chicago History Graduate Student Conference on May 14th at
the LUC Lakeshore campus. The organizing committee is seeking proposals
from masters and doctoral graduate students at Chicago-area universities
in any field, time period, or approach in history. Sample sessions
include cultural history, social history, history of race, gender, and
ethnicity, and public history. The goal of this conference is to provide
an opportunity for students to gain experience presenting papers and to
receive feedback from their peers on their work. Chairs and discussants
will be selected from among the faculty at Loyola University Chicago and
other regional universities.
In addition to the papers presented, the conference will also feature
two special presentations. Keynote speaker and Loyola History Department
faculty member Dr. Harold Platt will be speaking about his forthcoming
publication Shock Cities: The Environmental Transformation and Reform of
Manchester and Chicago. In addition, a special presentation entitled
Inside the Historian's Craft: A Discussion With Lewis Erenberg and
Harold Platt will feature a career retrospective of Loyola History
Department faculty members Dr. Lewis Erenberg and Dr. Harold Platt. Dr.
Erenberg is the author of Steppin' Out: New York City Nightlife and the
Transformation of American Culture, 1890-1930 and Swingin' The Dream:
Big Band Jazz and The Rebirth of American Culture. Both historians will
speak about their approaches to history, their past publications, and
their current research.
