Dear colleagues:
I am writing to alert you to a lecture on campus this Wednesday (Oct.
19) and to encourage you and your students to attend.
Silvia Arrom (history, Brandeis) will be speaking on Thursday about the
Ladies of Charity in nineteenth-century Mexico. Her current work on
this topic grows out of her earlier scholarship on women and charity in
eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Mexican history, including two
pioneering books:
--The Women of Mexico City, 1790-1857 (Stanford U. P., 1985)
--Containing the Poor: The Mexico City Poorhouse, 1774-1871 (Duke
University Press, 2000)
Professor Arrom's talk is sponsored by the office of Mission and Values,
which I commend for inviting this first-rate scholar of Latin American
history to DePaul. I am forwarding their message below about Professor
Arrom's visit; a flyer also is attached.
Please consider attending Professor Arrom's lecture and encourage your
students to do so as well.
Thanks, and hope to see you Wednesday.
