Dear M.A. in History students,
Just a quick note to make sure that you are aware of a couple of
important pieces of information.
1) PREREQUISITE: Beginning this quarter, the registration computer is
enforcing the HST 421 prerequisite for all 400-level history courses.
The prerequisite does NOT APPLY to students who matriculated into the
old M.A. in history program (that is, those who began the program before
Autumn 2004). If you are a student in that category and have not yet
registered, you will need to request that your professor complete a
"Prerequisite Override" form for you. The bright orange forms are on the
front desk in the History Dept. office and require the signature of the
relevant faculty member.
2) ENROLLMENTS FOR AUTUMN QUARTER:
As of today, HST 421 is fully enrolled. If you are an incoming
first-year M.A. in History student but have not yet registered for HST
421, please get in touch with me ASAP. HST 431 The Cold War (taught by
Colleen Doody) and HST 435 Medieval Saints and Mystics (Karen Scott) are
also nearly full. If you would like to take one of these classes but
still haven't registered, I urge you to do so ASAP. (Again, if you are a
pre-2004 M.A. student, you will need to get a prerequisite override
before you can register.)
3) INDEPENDENT STUDY: The Graduate Program Committee has instituted a
new procedure for graduate independent study courses. The procedure is
attached as is a copy of the proposal cover sheet form. Any M.A. in
History student who wants to do an independent study course MUST now
follow this procedure.
4) PLANNING AHEAD: Here is the TENTATIVE list of M.A. in History course
offerings for Winter and Spring quarters. Please be aware that this
schedule may still change.
WINTER QUARTER 2007
HST 431 COLLOQUIUM IN AMERICAN HISTORY - SEX AND GENDER IN EARLY
AMERICA (TOM FOSTER)
HST 435 COLLOQUIUM IN EUROPEAN HISTORY - ETHNICITY AND MIGRATION IN
POST-1945 EUROPE (JULIA WOESTHOFF)
HST 437 COLLOQUIUM IN WORLD HISTORY - APPROACHES TO ANCIENT WORLD
HISTORY (SCOTT BUCKING)
SPRING QUARTER 2007
HST 489 THE GRADUATE CAPSTONE (LISA SIGEL)
HST 432 COLLOQUIUM IN LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY - LATIN AMERICAN SOCIAL
MOVEMENTS (MORA-TORRES)
HST 437 COLLOQUIUM IN WORLD HISTORY - JAMESTOWN AND THE ATLANTIC WORLD
(ELLEN ESLINGER)
That's it for now. I will be out of the country from Tuesday, August
22nd to Sunday, September 3rd. Thanks to internet cafes, I should be
able to check my email at least a couple of times during that period.
But please be patient as it might take me a few days to get back to you.
Hope you enjoy these last days of summer. The 2006-07 Graduate Student
Handbook will be posted soon on the History Dept website.
All the best,
Dr. S
