Dear Intrepid Historians,
In addition to the list of events you've already received (copied
below), we are thrilled to announce our own participation in the "One
Book, One Chicago" program.
Here's how it will work.
In the next week or so, you will receive information about a series of
History Department events.
FIRST!!!
On Wednesday, November 7, the department has reserved a block of 15
seats for the Steppenwolf Theater production of the play. WAIT! It
gets better! We will underwrite 100% of the cost, so that the cost to
you is $0. Only certain restrictions apply. We will start a list of
those interested and the first 15 respondees will be assured seats. We
will maintain the list so that if anyone is unable to attend, we will go
down the list to the next person. And, we only have enough tickets and
funding for one ticket per student (and it should, of course, be that
student). WAIT! There's more! We are working diligently to include an
informal dinner. This event will include these lucky 15 students and a
group of your history professors.....
This will also fit into the November 9 History Club meeting and
presentation by a few of your profs.... As well as a university panel
with Drs. Colleen Doody and Tom Foster. More on those soon....
So...now, what are you waiting for? I'm starting the list....
(By the way, a huge, huge thanks to the History Department, History
Club, and Phi Alpha Theta. Also, a big thanks to Dr. Julia Woesthoff,
who made the contacts and made the arrangements. And, thanks to Dr.
Roshanna Sylvester, who, as interim chair of the History Department, not
only gave us the material in the first place, but then agreed to fund
this great opportunity! So, take a few minutes...after you've
responded, of course...to send your thanks to them!)
Regards, Dr. B

Subject: Important events for the AQ!
Dear Intrepid Historians, History Majors, History Minors, History
Students, History Makers, History Buffs, and Historian Wannabes,
I write to you in this autumnal hour to announce a number of interesting
and upcoming events! Read on! You will be amazed, excited, and, dare I
say, rendered utterly speechless!
On Friday, October 19, 3:30-5:00 the History Club, Phi Alpha Theta, and
the History Department will be sponsoring a...you got it...History
Party! Come one, come all to a student-faculty get together! It's time
to drink soft beverages, eat pizza, and chat (not, however, at the same
time!) with your fellow history lovers and history teachers (also known
as, "other fellow history lovers"). And, we may even have the answer to
that age old question: just how many historians does it take to properly
cite according to the strict rules of the Chicago Manual of Style?
(And, no looking up the answer!)
On Friday, November 9, 3:30-5:00 the History Club, Phi Alpha Theta, and
the History Department will be sponsoring the third annual "book
recommendation list" which has helped shape so many people's lives
(okay, which has helped shape so many people's holiday gift lists...).
But, wait, there's more! We saved the best till last! There will be a
faculty talk about the issues raised in the play The Crucible (you got
your Salem witches for Halloween, you got your McCarthyism for...well,
Halloween, and you got your current events...what more could you ask
for?), with, as they say in the food service, "light refreshments."
This will be a great way to get ready for finals! (Salem, McCarthyism,
current events...finals...get the connection?)
Finally, watch for another, very, very, very (did I mention that it's
very, very, very) cool announcement about a very, very, very cool field
trip. We are still working out the details, but be sure to be one of
the first fifteen callers to increase your chances.... (I'm not kidding
this time...really....)
On behalf of the History Department, I wish you a very happy autumn
quarter. Remember to write these dates down (locations to follow)!
Then, get back to studying.... Seminar papers are coming due!
Best wishes, Dr. B
