Call for Papers
"Many Paths to Urban History: A Conference on Politics, Culture, Economics, and Society in the City."
The history graduate students of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) are pleased to announce the first Annual Chicago Graduate Student History Conference (CGSHC), to be held at UIC on Saturday, April 19 2008.
In this conference we want to encourage history graduate students of all kinds--Internationalists, culturalists, Americanists, Economists, and so on--to come together and share their work in an attempt to build a synthetic understanding of urban life and history. We believe there is much to gain at this moment by building bridges between these interests and acknowledging the validity of alternative perspectives. We hope that by gathering together a diverse body of scholarship we can learn from the different methods, theories, and languages and produce fruitful dialogue.
Presentations from history graduate students in all research areas are welcome. In addition, graduate students working on historical topics in other social science disciplines are encouraged to apply. While most of these presentations will be based on completed seminar papers, students at earlier stages in their research are also encouraged to submit proposals. Please send proposals for individual papers or full panels to cgshc08 at gmail.com. Proposals must be received by February 15, 2008. Proposal guidelines can be found below.
Accepted presenters will deliver a 10-15 minute talk on their research and receive feedback from a commentator and the assembled professors and graduate students.
The conference will be held concurrently with the 2008 session of the Midwest Labor and Working Class History Colloquium (MLWCH).
