Boom towns of the 21st century are alive and thriving in Asia and the Middle East, and Chicago architects are major participants in the planning of these mega-cities. With works by firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP and Murphy/Jahn, the Boom Towns! exhibition explores the architecture of explosive growth in cities including Abu Dhabi and Masdar City.

Reflecting on the boom that Chicago experienced in the late 19th century, the exhibition includes photographs, drawings, models and videos that encourage visitors to travel between eras and continents in order to consider how architects shape dynamic societies.

Lynn Becker, guest curator, is a prolific writer on architecture. His work has appeared in Metropolis magazine, Harvard Design magazine and the Chicago Reader.

Exhibition and program support for Boom Towns! is provided by generous grants from:
Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts
Zell Family Foundation
