Dear History graduate students,
I hope fall quarter is off to a smooth start for all of you. Your classmates in HST 435: Graduate Colloquium in European History/Culture of the Enlightenment and I are planning to attend a new and much-anticipated production of "Candide" (based on Voltaire's mid-eighteenth-century novel) at the Goodman Theatre in the Loop NEXT Wednesday, September 22 at 8:00 p.m. A few other faculty members will be attending as well, and the department would like wanted to extend the offer to the rest of you, too. Please let me know by NOON on Wednesday, Sept. 15 (probably "today" for most of you reading this in the morning) if you would like one of the discounted $20 tickets to this show.
The ticket price for DePaul students of $20 is a very steep discount off the regular ticket price. To get this group deal, I need to order the tickets ASAP. (I apologize for the late notice. It turns out that it is much less expensive to attend next week than later in the run.) Since I need to pre-pay for the tickets tomorrow, I'm afraid that I cannot take "tentative" orders; please only request a ticket if you can commit to purchase one and attend the performance.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Goodman, it's in the Loop on the corner of Dearborn and Lake. It's very accessible via the CTA (all El lines) and also convenient to downtown Metra stations. The director, Mary Zimmerman, is known for her innovative staging of literary and historical works. For more information on the production, you mnight want to see the following information:

Goodman's website, including a video clip of Mary Zimmerman discussing

WARNING: When you access this page, you'll hear a loud horn fanfare
coming out of your computer; might want to turn down the volume
beforehand.

I'll provide more information about where/when to meet before the performance etc. to those who let me know that they want tickets. I hope to see many of you next week.

p.s. Depending on ticket availability, I can also TRY to get tickets for guests of DePaul history graduate students. If you would like to order tickets for both yourself and a guest who is not in DePaul's history program, the pair would cost $47 ($20 for the DePaul HST student and $27, still a substantial discount, for the non-HST student). The ability to accommodate guests will depend on ticket availability, so if you indicate that you'd like to bring a guest, please also indicate whether you would still want a ticket even if I could get only one, just for you.
