Dear Intrepid Historians,
Welcome back from spring break! Hope yours was restful!
I wanted to take this time to remind you that our deadline for submissions to the seventh annual Student History Conference is midnight, this Wednesday, March 30. I urge you to consider submitting a paper and remember:
-- the Student History Conference is an all-day celebration of your work, held in Student Center, with special workshops (last year, we had workshops sponsored by the Career Center), refreshments and a catered luncheon, and a keynote speech by a visiting scholar (this year's speech is by Asif Siddiqi, who has written about the US and Soviet space programs, and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of manned space flight)
-- the Student History Conference is modeled on professional historical association conferences and is open to your peers, friends, family, faculty and staff
-- the Student History Conference is the first, and longest-running, student research conference in the college of LAS...the college's own student research conference is modeled on ours
-- the Student History Conference is when we recognize our initiates into Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society, and our top graduating seniors
-- conference papers are submitted to the library website and are eligible for the first edition of our e-journal, which is the first undergrad and grad student research e-journal in the university (and one of a small number, nationally, in history)
-- Student History Conference presentations and e-journal papers are excellent ways to demonstrate your skills to prospective employers, as well as to grad and professional schools...all of whom are looking for prospective employees and students who demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, critical thinking skills, initiative, willingness to accept challenges, and "follow through" on these challenges
-- the department offers workshops to provide presenters with the guidance and insights to successfully present their papers
So, what are you waiting for? Whether you are an undergrad who has finished some research in 299s, 390s, or other courses, or a grad student who is doing research, you are welcome to submit your work. Papers in all categories are welcome...including archival research and historiographical work.
Attached is the original flyer, with further information about submission.
Best regards and well wishes for a successful spring quarter!
