PRESENTS:
Empowering Women Through Trade
Pushpika Freitas
Executive Director, MarketPlace: Handiwork of India
Tuesday, February 10th at 6 p.m.
1 E. Jackson Blvd., 11th Floor, Rm. 11013
DePaul University, Chicago, IL (Downtown Campus*)
Join featured speaker Pushpika Freitas, executive director of MarketPlace:
Handiwork of India (www.marketplaceindia.com), for a discussion of how women
are empowered through small business development and trade. Freitas has
more than two decades of experience organizing disadvantaged women and
artisans. She developed the first cooperative of women artisans in Mumbai
and has developed a successful business importing fairly traded goods from
her native India. Freitas will discuss the empowerment of women who became
involved in trade - changes women have made in their life, how they
challenged tradition and more.
Market Place: Handwork of India is a non-profit organization dedicated to
empowering women and people with handicaps in India by providing economic
stability and dignity through employment. They work with nearly 500
artisans.
The event is sponsored by the Illinois Society for International Development
(ISID), which promotes awareness of international development issues in
Illinois and encourages networking and discussion. ISID organizes events
monthly, the second Tuesday of every month, focusing on international
development issues. Information about events and opportunities related to
international development is distributed through the ISID listserve.
