"Documents of Freedom" and "Free to Vote" at Chicago Historical
Society
Opens July 4th
America's quest for freedom and civil rights is revealed through two
related exhibitions of rare manuscripts and presidential election
artifacts. On public view in "Documents of Freedom" will be first
printings of the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Northwest
Ordinance; rare copies of the Declaration of Independence and
Emancipation
Proclamation; a one-of-a-kind presidential order signed by Abraham
Lincoln; and a commemorative copy of the Thirteenth Amendment, which
abolished slavery. A new presentation, "Free to Vote," looks at
presidential campaigns and the expansion of voting rights in America.
The
exhibition includes banners, ribbons, buttons, photos, and posters
from
the campaigns of Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant,
Richard Nixon, and many others, as well as items representing the
women's
suffrage movement.
