Dear History Students,
I wanted to alert you to an excellent internship opportunity at the
Great Lakes Region National Archives (I have confirmed that this is a
paid internship, though details of compensation are not yet published.):

The National Archives-Great Lakes Region in Chicago is hiring graduate
and advanced undergraduate students for the summer. This is a
terrific opportunity for students with a strong interest in history
and archives to learn more about what kinds of primary source
documents can be found in archives, how they are preserved, and how
they are made available to the public. Students selected for these
positions will assist the National Archives with processing historical
records.  Work may include: preliminary inventories of record series;
arranging unorganized records; describing records through the creation
of box lists, finding aids, and/or indexes; preservation surveys; and
basic preservation of older records. The positions are for up to
three months in duration and may be full or half-time.

The National Archives-Great Lakes Region holds over 84,000 cubic feet
of unique records dating from 1800 to the early 1990s. These records
document Federal Government activity in Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan,Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. These records are preserved
by the National Archives because they have continuing practical value
for Government operations, they protect both public and private
rights, and have research value for anyone with an interest in the
social, economic, or political development of States served by the
regional archives. The records are diverse in content, covering the
Great Lakes and inland waterways, agriculture, African Americans and
Native Americans, the environment, immigration and naturalization,
inventions and technology, railroads, the automotive industry, the
labor movement, organized crime, the military, domestic conditions
during World Wars I and II, sedition and treason, nuclear energy
research, and many other subjects. Additional information on the
National Archives-Great Lakes Region can be found at <http://www.archives.gov/great-lakes/archives/
 >.

Proof of U.S. citizenship and background investigation are required
for all candidates. Interested students should send a cover letter,
current transcript, and letter of recommendation to:
