Dear history students,
I am writing to inform you of the 2008-2009 Newberry Library
Undergraduate Seminar (NLUS) and to encourage you to consider applying.
This year's seminar topic is "New Nation/New Culture: The United States
in the Age ofthe Early Republic, 1770-1850." The application deadline
is Oct. 17, 2008.
NLUS enables undergraduate students from DePaul, UIC, Loyola, and
Roosevelt universities to conduct original research in one of the
nation's leading rare materials libraries under the guidance of an
interdisciplinary faculty team. It is an especially good opportunity for
students who enjoy working intensively with primary sources and who may
be considering graduate study in *any* historical field. I am attaching
with this e-mail both a brochure about the 2009 Newberry Seminar and an
application form.
In the remainder of this message, I provide some additional information
about the course, how it fits with DePaul degree requirements, and how
it might affect your planning for winter quarter 2009. For further
information about the seminar topic, content, and instructors, please
refer to the attached brochure.
The intensive, semester-long NLUS course runs from from January 13, 2009
through May 5, 2009, spanning winter and spring quarters. Classes meet
for six hours per week at the Newberry Library, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participating students also should plan to
spend substantial additional time at the Newberry working on original
research projects using the library's rich collections. The Newberry is
located between Clark and Dearborn on Walton Street (convenient to the
CTA red line "Chicago" and "Clark/Division" stops).
DePaul students who successfully complete the seminar earn 8 credits
(the equivalent of two courses, one in winter 2009 and one in spring
2009) in two related disciplines. Usually 4 of the credits are taken in
history. Students can use 4 of the credits earned in NLUS to satisfy
the "Experiential Learning" requirement in the Liberal Studies program
if they wish.
This is a competitive program for highly motivated students with a
strong academic track record. The application deadline is October 17.
(Please note that this is later than indicated on the History
Department's website, which is in the process of being updated.)
IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR PROSPECTIVE NLUS APPLICANTS:
1. Please note that the application requires one letter of
recommendation from a professor. Please give the recommender ample time
to write on your behalf.
2. The outcome of the selection process will not be known until after
registration for winter 2009 courses has begun. Go ahead and register
for an alternative slate of courses for winter 2009 with the idea that
if your application is accepted, you may drop one course and replace it
with the Newberry Seminar. To facilitate this potential course swap, I
strongly recommend that you try to keep your Tuesdays and Thursday
afternoons free in winter 2009, or to schedule at those times only the
course that you would drop if accepted into the Newberry Seminar.
(Remember that NLUS meets at the Newberry Library from 1-4 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, and don't forget to budget travel time, too.)
If you are interested in a rigorous research seminar experience at a
leading research library, please consider applying for the Newberry
Library Undergraduate Seminar. If you have questions, please contact me
by e-mail at vtikoff at depaul.edu or by phone at 773-325-1570. Also,
please feel free to forward this e-mail to other students who might be
interested in this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Prof. Tikoff
