______________

Dear History Student:

Greetings from Professor Tyson.

Have you ever found yourself thinking "what can I *do* with my history major/minor after graduation"? If so, you should consider exploring coursework in Public History.

So what *is* "Public History" anyhow? Put simply, public history uses the skills and methods of academic history with an eye toward connecting the public with History. Public historians are trained to work with a diverse range of primary sources (archival documents, artifacts, art, oral histories, film, photographs, the built environment), and find employment in a range of locales, such as archives, historical societies, historic sites, libraries, museums, government agencies, universities, film production agencies, and the world wide web.

Last year the History Department launched a Public History concentration for its undergraduate History Majors--the only one of its kind in Chicago! The required courses that are specifically part of the Public History Concentration will introduce you to the range of careers that are possible for public historians, and will give you the opportunity to hone your research, writing, and presentation skills. If you take courses in the Public History Concentration, expect experiential learning opportunities that will connect you and your work with an audience beyond the classroom.

This Fall 2009, the History Department is pleased to offer three exciting, hands-on public history courses. While one course has filled (HST 382: Chicago History Museum, Advanced Seminar), we still have space in "HST 269, Introduction to Public History" (section 102 is open and meets MW 2:40-4:10) and "HST 389: Topics in Public History" (TuTh 2:40-4:10).Both of these courses are offered as part of the Public History Concentration for History Majors, and can also be taken to fulfill requirements for those of you taking the Standard Concentration as well. **Since these courses will only be offered during Fall Quarter this year, if you are interested in the Public History Concentration, I strongly urge you to consider enrolling in one of these two courses.**

For information on course requirements for the Public History Concentration go to: http://las.depaul.edu/history/Programs/HistoryMajorPubHist/index.asp If you have questions about Public History or the new concentration, please write me at prof.tyson at gmail.com or atyson2 at depaul.edu. I'd also be happy to meet with you once the quarter begins.

Have a good rest of summer and I hope to see you in the Fall!

Cheers,

Dr. Amy Tyson
