Dear History students,
Most of you should have already received information about the Newberry
Library Undergraduate Seminar earlier this quarter. I am writing to you
again because we EVEN THOUGH THE STATED APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS PASSED,
WE ARE STILL COLLECTING APPLICATIONS TO FILL A FEW REMAINING SLOTS. If
you are interested, please submit an application as soon as possible.
Since time is of the essence, the selection committee also is telling
students who apply now that, if they prefer, in lieu of asking a faculty
member to write a letter of recommendation on their behalf, they may
just provide the name and contact information (office phone number and
e-mail address) of one or two faculty members who might serve as
references. In such cases, the selection committee will get oral
recommendations over the phone.
This year's Newberry seminar topic is "Islands: Missionaries, Migration,
and Labor in the Atlantic World and Pacific Rim," which will be taught
at the Newberry Library during winter and spring quarters 2010 by
Professors Lori Pierce of DePaul's American Studies Program and Erik
Gellman of Roosevelt University's History Department.
NLUS enables undergraduate students from DePaul, UIC, Loyola, and
Roosevelt universities to conduct original research in one of the
nation's leading rare materials libraries under the guidance of an
interdisciplinary faculty team. It is an especially good opportunity for
students who enjoy working intensively with primary sources and who may
be considering graduate study in the humanities, history, and social
science fields. I am attaching with this e-mail a description of the
2010 Newberry Seminar, a flyer, and an application form. Additional
information (and a link to the application form) is also available
through the History Department's website, at
http://las.depaul.edu/history/StudentResources/NLUS/index.asp
The intensive, semester-long NLUS course runs from from January through
early May, 2010, spanning winter and spring quarters. Classes meet
for six hours per week at the Newberry Library, from approximately
1:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participating students also
should plan to
spend substantial additional time at the Newberry working on original
research projects using the library's rich collections. The Newberry is
located between Clark and Dearborn on Walton Street, convenient to the
CTA red line "Chicago" and "Clark/Division" stops.
DePaul students who successfully complete the seminar earn 9 credits
(the equivalent of two 4.5-credit courses, one in winter 2010 and one in
spring 2010) in two related disciplines, pending the approval of faculty
advisors/department chairs. Students can use half of the credits
earned in NLUS to satisfy the "Experiential Learning" requirement in the
Liberal Studies program if they wish.
If you are interested in a challenging but rewarding research seminar
experience at a renowned research library, please consider applying for
a slot in the Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar. If you have
questions about the application process, please contact me by e-mail at
vtikoff at depaul.edu or by phone at 773-325-1570. If you have questions
about the seminar itself, please contact Professor Pierce at
lpierce3 at depaul.edu. Also please feel free to forward this e-mail to
other DePaul LA&S undergraduate students who might be interested in this
opportunity.
Finally, best wishes to each of you in all your 2009-10 courses!
Sincerely,
Prof. Tikoff
History Department
