Dear History students,
I hope that the academic year is off to a strong start for each of you.
I am writing to inform you of the 2009-2010 Newberry Library
Undergraduate Seminar (NLUS) and to encourage you to apply.
This year's seminar topic is "Islands: Missionaries, Migration, and
Labor in the Atlantic World and Pacific Rim," which will be taught at
the Newberry Library during winter and spring quarters 2010 by
Professors Lori Pierce of DePaul's American Studies Program and Erik
Gellman of Roosevelt University's History Department. It is a
particularly opportunity for history students! The application deadline
is October 2, 2009. (Please note that this deadline extends the original
deadline of September 25, 2009, which you may have seen or heard
announced.)
The NewberrySeminar enables undergraduate students from DePaul, UIC,
Loyola, and Roosevelt universities to conduct original research in one
of the nation's leading rare materials libraries under the guidance of
an interdisciplinary faculty team. It is an especially good opportunity
for students who enjoy working intensively with primary sources and who
may be considering graduate study in the humanities, history, and social
science fields. I am attaching with this e-mail a description of the
2010 Newberry Seminar and an application form. Additional information
(and a link to the application form) is also available through the
History Department's website, at
http://las.depaul.edu/history/StudentResources/NLUS/index.asp
In the remainder of this message, I provide some additional information
about the course, how it fits with DePaul degree requirements, and how
it might affect your planning for the upcoming winter and spring
quarters.
The intensive, semester-long NLUS course runs from from January through
early May, 2010, spanning winter and spring quarters. Classes meet
for six hours per week at the Newberry Library, from approximately
1:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participating students also
should plan to
spend substantial additional time at the Newberry working on original
research projects using the library's rich collections. The Newberry is
located between Clark and Dearborn on Walton Street, convenient to the
CTA red line "Chicago" and "Clark/Division" stops.
DePaul students who successfully complete the seminar earn 9 credits
(the equivalent of two 4.5-credit courses, one in winter 2010 and one in
spring 2010) in two related disciplines, pending the approval of faculty
advisors/department chairs. Students can use half of the credits
earned in NLUS to satisfy the "Experiential Learning" requirement in the
Liberal Studies program if they wish.
This is a competitive interdisciplinary program for highly motivated
students with a strong academic track record. Again, the application
deadline is October 2, 2009.
IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR PROSPECTIVE NLUS APPLICANTS:
1. Please note that the application requires one letter of
recommendation from a professor. Please give the recommender ample time
to write on your behalf.
2. Please note that the application also requests a writing sample.
Please follow the guidelines on the application form (submit a clean,
unmarked copy, etc.).
2. The outcome of the selection process may not be known until after
registration for winter 2010 courses has begun. If you apply, go ahead
and register for an alternative slate of courses for winter 2010 with
the idea that if your NLUS pplication is accepted, you may drop one
course and replace it with the Newberry Seminar. To facilitate this
potential course swap, I strongly recommend that you try to keep your
Tuesdays and Thursday
afternoons free in winter 2010, or to schedule at those times only the
course that you would drop if accepted into the Newberry Seminar.
(Remember that NLUS meets at the Newberry Library from on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons, approximately 1:00-4:00 p.m., and don't forget to
budget travel time, too.)
If you are interested in a rigorous research seminar experience at a
leading research library, please consider applying for a slot in the
Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar. If you have questions about the
application process, please contact me by e-mail at vtikoff at depaul.edu
or by phone at 773-325-1570. If you have questions about the seminar
itself, please contact Professor Pierce at lpierce3 at depaul.edu. Also
please feel free to forward this e-mail to other DePaul LA&S
undergraduate students who might be interested in this opportunity.
Finally, best wishes to each of you in all your 2009-10 courses!
Sincerely,
Prof. Tikoff
History Department
