Dear History majors,
As you know, registration for autumn 2010 courses begins this week. I'm
writing to let you know about the research practicum (HST 390) sequences
that are planned for the 2010-11 academic year so that you can arrange
your schedules accordingly.
As most of you know, students in the "new" major (generally, students
who declared the HST major in fall 2008 or later) need to complete a HST
390 research practicum course as part of their degree requirements.
Each section of HST 390 requires students to have completed a separate
300-level "gateway" course during the prior quarter and to have
submitted a successful research prospectus. (Registration for HST 390
requires permission of the instructor.) Since all 300-level HST courses
have HST 299 as a prerequisite, you will not be able to begin the
practicum sequence unless you will have completed HST 299 with a grade
of C- or higher before the first course of the sequence begins.
In other words, all students in the "new" major should plan to take a
two-quarter HST 3xx-390 sequence after they complete HST 299. The
sequences are offered fall-winter and winter-spring. To assist your
course planning, I want to let you know the HST 3xx-390 sequences that
are slated for 2010-11. Please also note that we generally recommend
*against* taking both HST 390 and HST 397 in the same quarter.
