Please take a moment to email rules at isbe.net regarding the proposed changes to licensure renewal that would eliminate counting hours as a mentor for student teachers. We have until August 25th to make our voices heard!

IACTE Licensure Committee Update
Request to Consider Making Public Comment

ISBE has posted rules 25.805 for review regarding the renewal process for holders of professional educator licenses beginning July 1, 2014. The new law generally provides that holders of teaching or school support personnel endorsements complete 120 clock hours of professional development activities focused on  1) sustained learning, 2) educator performance, 3) standards-based systems, 4) student growth and school and district improvement and 5) Higher Education course work.   Absent from the new rules are defined activities that we were previously able to grant that allowed K-12 cooperating teachers who hosted student teachers and provide clinical placement to receive CPDUs.  The definition for sustained learning shall mean professional development that includes structured opportunities for educators to apply what they have learned in real-life situations and/or professional development offered over a course of two or more sessions, would seem to allow for the continuation of those activities. Similar to the role of mentor teacher, supervising pre-service candidates allows for the development of future educators.

IACTE is asking that you provide comments by August 25, to support the continuation of professional development credit for the supervision of pre-service candidates under the rules.  The Professional Development hours earned would need to be consistent across institutions.  You may want to recommend that we continue to award thirty professional development hours for supervising a student teacher or intern and twelve hours for supervising one of more candidates in pre-student teaching clinical experiences.  Each of these types of supervision may be counted once during the course of the renewal cycle.
