DePaul is offering Ancient Greek and Roman Comedy, MOL 213, for the first time. In this course students encounter selected landmarks of Greek and Roman satirical literature; they learn important theories of interpretation, theories of humor as well as secondary interpretative opinions about the works assigned. The roots of comedy extend deep into antiquity. Students will study authors ancient and modern in order to sharpen their critical abilities and to gain insight into Athens, Rome as well as the contemporary cultural milieu. Students explore the boundaries of the comic, the social and political function of comedy in different cultural contexts, and the varieties of humor.
