Dear History majors:
I'm writing to alert you to a special opportunity to take a course at
the Newberry Library during the winter and spring quarters (2006). The
topic is "Exchange Before Orientalism: Encounters Between Asia and
Europe, 1500-1800." This is an excellent opportunity for students
interested in the seminar topic and for those who want to gain
experience conducting original research at a first-rate research
library. It is also a chance to meet students and professors from other
local universities. The course carries eight hours of DePaul course
credit, which can be used to satisfy DePaul's Experiential Learning
requirement and/or as credit in the English or History departments.
(Other departments also may grant credit, at the chair's discretion.)
The application deadline is Nov. 11.
I realize that many of you already have registered for winter quarter
2006 and regret that we did not receive the course information and
application materials to pass onto you earlier. Nonetheless, we
strongly encourage those of you who want an intensive research
experience, especially those who are considering graduate study in
history or another humanities discipline, to consider applying to
participate in the 2006 Newberry Library Seminar.
As Professor Lucy Rinehart (of the English department) writes:
"The Newberry seminar program presents DePaul students with a unique
opportunity for study and research in a challenging, intensive,
interdisciplinary, intercollegiate setting. Through a process of
competitive application . . ., five students are selected from each of
the participating five schools (DePaul, Loyola, UIC, and Roosevelt).
The seminar carries two course credits (8 credit hours) and will meet
Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1-4 p.m., from January 10th through May
4th."
This year's seminar topic is "Exchange Before Orientalism: Encounters
Between Asia and Europe, 1500-1800." The instructors will be Ellen
McClure, Associate Professor of French, Spanish, Italian, and
Portuguese, and Laura Hostetler, Associate Professor of History, both of
University of Illinois at Chicago. A fuller course description can be
found at the Newberry Library website at
http://www.newberry.org/research/undergrad/nlus.html
Students wishing to participate in this seminar need to complete a very
short application, which includes a brief letter of reference from a
professor. The APPLICATION DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER Nov. 11, 2005, 5:00
P.M. The application form and directions are attached. They also are
available in the History Department's reception area (SAC 420), at the
Blackboard page for history majors, and from Professor Rinehart in
DePaul's English Department (773-325-1785, lrinehar at depaul.edu).
If you are interested in a challenging, rigorous, and rewarding seminar
experience, doing original research at the Newberry Library, and meeting
students and professors from other universities, please consider
applying for the Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar.
If you have any questions about the program, please contact Professor
Storey (mstorey at depaul.edu) or me (vtikoff at depaul.edu) in the History
Department--both of us have taught in this program in the past--or
Professor Lucy Rinehart in the English department (rinehar at depaul.edu),
who is DePaul's liaison with the Newberry for this program.
Best wishes to all of you for the remaining weeks of the quarter.
-Valentina Tikoff, History Department
