Popular Propaganda of China's Cultural Revolution

 

This class will host discussions on the propaganda present in popular society during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Readings supplied will focus on memoirs of those directly involved in the Cultural Revolution as well as more recent intellectual interpretations of one of the most famous periods of modern Chinese history. The class will be invited to discuss the visual imagery of socialist realist propaganda, the use of language by social groups during the Cultural Revolution, and comparisons between Communist propaganda before and during the Cultural Revolution as well as reactions in the Western World to this period. 

 

John Harney is our new visiting assistant professor. Dr. Harney comes to us from the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his PhD in modern Chinese history. His research focuses on sports culture and sporting communities in East Asia and in Ireland and the use of language in the formation of social identity in East Asia.

HST 322-201 Topics in Asian History: Gandhi and South Asia
LPC, MW, 1120-1250.

Remarkably few historical figures have left a legacy of peace. Mohandas K. Gandhi was one. His political philosophy and political action were based on truth and non-violence. Gandhi's revolutionary concept of satyagraha, or non-violent non-cooperation, was critical in India gaining independence from British rule. His influence is not limited to South Asia as his ideas were successfully adopted by Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, among others. 

'Gandhi & South Asia' will examine the political and intellectual history of Gandhi - the Mahatma. We will read a variety of texts by and on Gandhi on a wide-range of topics: the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, nationalism in India, British imperialism, sexuality and the body, Western Civilization, and non-violence. Finally, we will look at the impact of Gandhi's thought on twentieth-century world history and examine critiques of his ideas.

HST 389 - 201 TOPICS IN PUBLIC HISTORY, "DOING DIGITAL HISTORY"
Class # 23140, TuTh 9:40AM - 11:10AM

This section of HST 389 will emphasize the rapidly expanding world of digital history, introducing students to the range of goals and approaches employed by those who have mounted digital history websites. It will also enhance students' abilities to engage with the web as a public history space, both as consumers and producers of public history content.

 

Public history is a field of history that requires its practitioners to use the skills and methods of academic history with an eye towards connecting the public with that history. This seminar focuses on the skills, methods, sources and themes that are relevant to historians whose work takes them outside of the classroom.
